A painting by renowned Chinese artist and minor government official Zhao Mengfu
Description
Despite the hierarchical restrictions he imposed upon the Chinese, Kublai Khan’s love for Chinese art surpassed its use as merely a tool of governance. The Chinese artist Zhao Mengfu was respected by the Khan and was given a (albeit unimportant) government position, which was a significant departure from the norms of the court.
